Germany and Singapore
Bilateral relations between the two countries are good. They rest on a firm basis of cooperation at various levels, both bilaterally and multilaterally. Singapore's constructive role in ASEAN, its unusual stability and its regional importance make it an important partner for German foreign policy. Singapore is held in high esteem as a motor and mediator in promoting political relations between Europe and Asia.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Singapore
From 1 to 2 June 2011, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Singapore. She called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shortly after her arrival. The two leaders exchanged views on Singapore, Asia and Europe, as well as broader issues of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank and financial market regulations.
Dr. Merkel held discussions with President S R Nathan and met former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew before an official dinner hosted by PM Lee an in her honor at the Istana.
Chancellor Merkel also delivered the 31st Singapore Lecture, organised by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and visited the Nation Orchid Garden where a special orchid hybrid was named after her („Dendrobium Angela Merkel“).
