Further information for students

Foreign students who want to study in Germany for a period longer than 3 months or who intend an internship/training stay in Germany are required to obtain a residence permit. This residence permit must be issued before you enter the country. Please note that you cannot apply for a residence permit in Germany and that you cannot convert a “tourist visa” into a “student visa”.

Students who would like to learn German and/or study in Germany can contact the DAAD Study Information Center Singapore for information on available courses and admission requiremements (www.ic.daad.de/singapore/)

All applicants must live permanently in Singapore. Students who currently do not study in Singapore but in another country have to submit the application there (regardless of PR status for Singapore)!!

Processing takes 2-3 months.

It is the applicants responsibility to ensure that his/her application is submitted on time. Bad planning on the applicant's side does not automatically warrant exceptional handling from our side.

For more details please check the respective information leaflets below.

PLEASE NOTE:

The Gerrman Embassy strongly recommends to all students/interns to open a „student's bank account (blocked account“)“ in Germany.

You can do this by e-mail with any bank in Germay. One possibility is to contact : db%27%com,db%27%student . The bank will forward the account opening form which you have to fill in and submit to the Embassy for the legalization of your signature. You can submit Monday-Friday 8.30-12.30 am without appointment at counter 3 (please take a number). The fee is SGD 30 in cash.
The legalization is done on the spot. You have to send the form to the bank and after having received the account number you have to transfer money. After having received the confirmation of the money transfer you can book an appointment for submitting your visa application. The processing time for the opening of the bank account is approx. 1 week.

A minimum of Euro 638,-- a month must be available. If you intend to stay for more than 1 year a minimum amount of 7.656,-- Euro for the first year (withdrawal limit of € 638,-- each month) must be guaranteed.

The bank account is not necesssary, if

  • you get a scholarship (by a German institutio) or
  • a person living in Germany guarantees for you. In this case you have to submit a formal letter of obligation according to paragraph §§66,68 of the Aliens Act. The person in Germany has to sign this „Verpflichtungserklärung“ in the competent German „Ausländerbehörde“.
